During this time of Covid-19 isolation, I have been working on very large, free landscapes, as wide as 10 feet. They look like oil on canvas, but they are pastel and ink.
New works: After a trip to Japan in July 2015 and a trip to China in 2017, I have begun experimenting with ink atop the pastel. Later, after seeing how white pines tower over hills and woods, with branches sticking out, I began to explore adding Asian calligraphy over the pastel. The characters usually translate as Eternity, Transcend, Be, Beautiful, etc.
I am usually part of a studio tour over Columbus Day Weekend, Saturday – Monday 10-5, in the southern Monadnock region of New Hampshire. For more information, see the Rindge section of the Fall Foliage Art Studio Tour website at http://www.fallfoliageartstudiotour.com/Home.html for my own studio or the Monadnock Art/Friends of the Dublin Art Colony tour: http://monadnockart.org/index.php/art-tour for fifty more studios.
Generally: my works are pastel on paper inspired by landscapes that I have visited over the past three to four decades. I think of them as “experiential” landscapes because they reflect my personal experience in these places: out west, abroad or in my own back yard with my children. Although the outlines look simple, I often rework those shapes and lines until they are just right, playing a good deal with negative spaces. Then I apply up to twenty layers of pastel, rubbed by hand until smooth. Then I redo the lines, often more freely than the first time. I am interested in lines working as contour, texture and energy all at once while the layered colors also move in their own way.
I have published a book of my work: Poetic Landscapes and Childscapes: Mother’s Nature that accompanied a solo show at the Jaffrey Civic Center in fall 2019. It is available for $35 including shipping. Contact me at susan.wadsworth@gmail.com or Gallery Sitka.
My work is now represented by Gallery Sitka, 2 Shaker Rd., D101 Shirley, MA 01464
