I have been inspired by Japanese and Chinese art for several decades, but I only began experimenting with ink on pastel after my visit to Japan in 2015. These works are very experimental as I try to integrate Asian characters (or kanji) into the landscape. I am trying to get line to work as gesture as well as contour. These two, 10 foot pieces were done during the summer of Covid-19. I was pretty isolated, so I worked a great deal in the studio and had fun playing with textures, lines, colors, gestures, etc. These were the largest pieces I’ve ever done in pastel and ink on paper.
