These are images from our visit to Guatemala over Christmas and New Years 2006-2007. I was fascinated by the ruins of these churches from old earthquakes, beginning the first of several ruins’ series. I was also most inspired when climbing Mt. Pacaya on New Year’s Day. There was lava flowing underneath the top layer of cooled black lava, and the sunset view from the top was most inspiring. As is usual in my work, I have combined different aspects of the experience into one work: the lava, the volcano, the views, the rugged fences, the moon rising and sun setting. The only thing I exaggerated was the volcano, which was not actually erupting at that time.
